Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
