Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People buying such medications need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
