Why this Democratic Party Has Concealed their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

This move from the Democratic National Committee to withhold the release of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race seems stunning yet to be expected. Averse to frank assessments, the Democrats' governing body operates closer to a PR firm than an electoral entity committed to building a volunteer base capable of prevailing at the polls.

A Culture of Conformity

Hesitant to challenge the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has stayed under the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Releasing an official autopsy could have demonstrated that party leaders actually want to promote honest conversation about the strategic failures which allowed the former president to return to the White House. However, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there's nothing to glean from the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

The top priority: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it is an unnecessary diversion from what truly matters," an explanation that has been offered to justify concealing the document.

Major Failures an Analysis Would Have Explored

A genuine analysis with any value would not dodge key points of failure. These include:

  • Electoral Alienation: Losing among a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the party's candidate in 2020 became a critical factor during the tight recent race.
  • A Decision to Run: The determined choice of the incumbent to stay in the race, coupled with a very late step-aside, is viewed as robbing the party's base of open primaries.
  • Failing Everyday Americans: During a time of rising costs, the campaign allegedly ceding to elite contributors and not managing to address the role of profit-seeking.
  • The Foreign Policy Factor: The failure to reconsider a stance concerning the situation in Gaza reportedly led to driving away significant blocs, notably among young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • A Decline in Youth Backing: Research indicates a significant decline in votes for the candidate among young voters.

A History Avoiding Accountability

The decision to withhold is consistent with a recurring tendency of sidestepping uncomfortable facts. It recalls a dynamic in which nearly all elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's decision for seeking another term until a catastrophic campaign event forced an exit.

At the same time, large majorities of the electorate were continually telling researchers that they did not want the incumbent to run again.

Campaign Spending Issues

An honest autopsy could examine matters regarding campaign spending, such as how much money flowed to party strategists and advertising contractors over the course of an electoral effort that burned through a staggering war chest over a few months.

The Larger Issue

Ultimately, the suppression surrounding this report highlights a deference toward party leaders responsible for an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The implication to the party's base – including countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not be trusted to understand what the leadership claim to have learned from an analysis based on conversations with insiders.

An organization unwilling to publicly examine its mistakes is unlikely to escape the cycle that proved so helpful to their opponents.
